Alexander Calder, a sculptor not particularly appreciated by all those disheartened by contemporary art (among whom I count myself!) has, this time, thanks to the generously rounded forms of his Red Spider stabile, given eloquent expression to the need for curves and warmth in this cold and rectilinear business district, a setting usually incompatible with painting. The decision to include this rounded red sculpture – a part of which is reflected in the windows of the bank – was made quite early on in the choice of subject for the painting, to provide an appropriate counterpoint to the rest of this urban landscape.
